News and updates
February 2026
Over the past month, U.S. grantmaking foundations have focused on adjusting strategies, opening new RFPs, and responding to equity and community-led priorities. Several funders are refining their approaches rather than dramatically expanding budgets, reflecting a cautious but still growth-oriented outlook following a 4.2% increase in foundation giving in 2024. New opportunities emphasize grassroots organizing, energy justice, and health equity, with many offers structured as multi-year or core support grants. Foundations are also experimenting with more participatory approaches, as seen in Polk Bros. Foundation’s plan to release three community-informed RFPs totaling 3 million dollars to help shape its future grantmaking. Intelligence roundups for February highlight more than 1 billion dollars in grant, research, and catalytic investment opportunities globally, with a strong U.S. component, underscoring sustained demand for impact-focused, systems-change proposals.
January 2026
The U.S. grantmaking sector shifted toward resiliency and precision in response to federal funding uncertainty. High-profile news included The Rockefeller Foundation and Builders Vision launching a $10 million Food is Medicine Impact Fund, while the MacArthur Foundation committed $10 million to bolster the humanities.
Sector reports from Foundation Source and Candid highlighted a rise in general operating support (GOS), which now accounts for over half of new grants as foundations aim to stabilize nonprofits. Additionally, the Foundation for Financial Planning reached record-high grant levels, reflecting a broader trend of “payout hikes” to protect essential services.
