Here are the highlights from last week’s foundation fundraising news worldwide:

– The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced a $6 billion funding shortfall, threatening life-saving programs.

– Germany and Indonesia signed a €75 million debt conversion agreement to strengthen public health.

– GoFundMe’s 2024 Year in Help report showed global generosity, with $235 million raised for natural disaster relief.

– Hilton Global Foundation committed $5.3 million to support nonprofits addressing poverty, career development, and environmental protection.

– The Global Fund and Stop TB Partnership collaborated to fight tuberculosis, the biggest infectious disease killer

This month has been marked by several multi-billion dollar announcements, largely focused on climate and science.

Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) Launches with $5 Billion: In a landmark move ahead of the COP30 summit in Brazil, the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) was launched on November 6th. Led by Brazil with support from Norway, France, Indonesia, and 34 other tropical forest nations, the fund has secured over $5 billion in initial capital. Its “game-changing” approach rewards countries for maintaining forest cover, with a requirement that at least 20% of payments go directly to Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Gates Foundation Pledges $1.4 Billion for Climate-Resilient Farming: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a major new commitment of $1.4 billion (to be spent by 2029). The funds are designated to help smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia adapt to climate change through technologies like bio-fertilizers, weather alerts, and soil health mapping.

European Research Council (ERC) Awards €684 Million in Synergy Grants: On November 6th, the ERC announced the results of its 2025 Synergy Grants. A total of €684 million will be distributed among 66 research teams (involving 239 scientists) to tackle complex scientific questions, from new methods to fight genetic errors to understanding the first microseconds of the universe.
